A body’s progress

Since jury duty ended, we started back at the gym. We’re doing a new routine out of Men’s Health and I LOVE it! It’s a set of 3 circuits of 4 exercises each. Each set is the perfect length: about 30 minutes. After we lift, we run on the treadmill for 20 minutes. 3 different workouts means I don’t get bored, and adding regular cardio feels really good.

My goal is to get faster, so I’m aiming to up the speed each week. I’m currently using the “random” setting, which modulates the incline, but keeps the pace the same. It keeps things interesting and challenging, and I don’t have to think about changing the settings to create my own interval session. I’m currently at level 7, 5.6 speed, and I end up running about 1.9 miles before the cool down. With the cool down and jog there, I’m doing about the equivalent of a 5K every day.

Even though we’ve only been back in our workout routine for about 2 weeks, I’m already feeling the difference. Maybe it’s the excitement about starting a new workout, or maybe I’m hallucinating, but I swear my body is already looking better. I know I’m getting stronger and improving my stamina because I can already do 20 minutes solid without stopping and feeling like I’m going to die. It’s still hard, but manageable. My legs feel longer and leaner. My muscle tone is more pronounced. I’m pretty psyched about how I might look in a few weeks based on the initial results.

    I wouldn’t suggest using anything straight of Men’s Health to train. Try HIIT and Rippetoes Starting Strength. You won’t regret it.

    Diet is obviously key. So get that straightened out before anything else.

    In short, jury duty is bad for your health. (But good for the nation.)
