for my loyal readers

April 29, 2010

Well, all thing must end eventually. And thus ends my latest hiatus from blogging. So much news …

Darling, I am blessed beyond all measure.

I am writing this from St. Mary’s in southern Maryland, where we had the most beautiful memorial celebration yesterday in honor of Maurine Holbert Hogaboom, who died a few weeks ago at age 98. She was a force, and she will be missed. There were so many great stories to be told. Funny stories, warm stories, by people who really loved her. I enjoy funerals for old people. There is no sense of tragedy, only loss. And this community feels a profound sense of loss after Maurine’s death, but she also brought them together in a wonderful way.

I was asked to sing a few solos, which turned out to be much harder than I expected. I knew Maurine, but not well. She was a charming grandmotherly presence. Wonderfully eccentric and warm and endlessly upbeat. The eulogies got to me. Tight throat. A few tears. Unexpected. Never sing at a funeral for someone you know. Oof.

Every time I come back here, I am always reminded of how beautiful it is, and also how much I love visiting but would never want to live here. It’s right on the water, and it is quiet. Night is night. There is little light pollution. The air smells clean. It’s peaceful. But even after a short bit, I find myself missing city life. I guess I am in the right place.
