This naming thing is really hard. My friend gave me The Baby Name Wizard, and I have also consulted the accompanying website and blog, as well as our family trees. Many names seem perfectly lovely until you try to envision actually using them to name your child FOREVER. Other names are tempting, but probably too weird to be acceptable. You don’t want your child to be the one suffering through school with the dorky name. Still others just don’t sound good with your last name. There’s a certain rhythm and cadence that sounds good, and a name’s either got it or not.

Even once you’ve got your list of potentials, you have to negotiate with your partner because he may have different ideas about it than you do. We just found out that our friends will be having a girl, and I am still trying to convince Hubby that does not mean that we won’t also have a girl. It’s not as if all the girl slots are now taken. Yet, he is certain, given his father’s side’s proclivity toward multiple boys over multiple generations, that we should really be focusing on boy names. I really don’t have a preference, but I am lobbying to have good choices for either possibility because you know how I hate to be unprepared.

Lastly, it seems practically un-American to choose a name that every other kid born in that year will be sporting. We are all about individuality, after all. So you have to think twice about a name you might really love, simply because it may be on the top 100 list for this generation. *Sigh* This could take awhile.

You’ve got time! I have always looked at it as a fun puzzle, not a stressful responsibility. When your kid is sporting the name, it will feel much more natural than it does now, musing over random sound combinations with no connection to a real face. And don’t worry about messing up . . . a name really doesn’t have to be forever. If your kid hates it or you have buyer’s remorse, there are always nicknames and middle names and even legal name changes (to be extreme).

I think we finalized last night after finding out the sex, but we’re not locking anything in just yet! And by the way, I totally believe Darien’s logic.

Um, Sarah, duhz. For a boy or a girl. You’re welcome. For reals, you & d did great naming your dogs, a kid can’t be that much more difficult. I’m only halfway joking. Enjoy the challenge.
